Congratulations to RWC Stolen Heir (“Charlie”) and Scott Hagan, up, Reserve winners in the Amateur Gentleman’s Five Gaited division at the Kentucky State Fair World’s Championship Horse Show!
Charlie is a very special 10-year-old gelding by Heir Emerald and out of Worth Steeling. He began his Five-Gaited show career in 2016 at the Kentucky State Fair World’s Championship Horse Show. He was the Reserve winner in the Two-Year-Old Five Gaited division with Pieter
Snyman, up, and has been competing steadily in the Five-Gaited division ever since.
Earlier this year, Charlie earned his blue ribbons in the Amateur Five Gaited and Amateur/Junior Exhibitor Five-Gaited Stake with Scott Hagan, up, at the Shelby County Dogwood Classic, the Five-Gaited Championship with Andre van Schalkwyk, up, at the KASPHA May Classic, and the Amateur Gentleman’s Five-Gaited division with Scott Hagan, up, at the Midwest Charity Horse Show.

Smoke is a Dutch harness horse on his top side and a hackney horse on his bottom side and is by Dondersteen out of Soline.

Breaking Bad, known in the barn as Walter, is a very game 7-year-old Standardbred registered with the United States Trotting Association as Drop The Pilot, but his show name clearly suits him.
Bred by Atlantic Trot, Inc., he is a big bay gelding out of Armatrading and by Sebastian K S, who is considered one of the world’s fastest trotters of all time on a 5/8 mile track, and was the 2014 Dan Patch Older Trotting Horse of the Year winner in Sweden. Breaking Bad’s pedigree features some of the best of both French and American breeding.

Congratulations to All American (Massive Stroke) and Scott Hagan, whip, reserve winners in the Roadster To Bike – Novice Horse class at the Rock Creek Horse Show! This is All American’s show debut with Hagan Saddlebreds, and he sure has come a long way.
Hagan Saddlebreds purchased Massive Stroke in 2022 from Anthony Miller at the Mid-Ohio Memorial Trotting Sale. He is a 7-year-old bay gelding out of Hawaiian Stroke and by the impressive Muscle Massive, who earned over $1.2 million in his racing career and was the winner of the 2010 Hambletonian.
After overcoming two bouts of catastrophic illness in 2020, Massive Stroke bounced back to racing. One of his former owners, Bernie Gaff, describes Massive Stroke as, “A horse with a lot of character, a showboat. He loves attention, has his own mind and loves to pass other horses.”
We are very proud of Massive Stroke and his show debut, and many thanks to Chris Gantley for his expert care and training of this very lucky horse.

Stolen Heir (“Charlie”) and André van Schalkwyk, up, started off our classes at the 2023 Kentucky State Fair World’s Championship Horse Show with a second place win in the Kentucky County Fair Five-Gaited Championship!
For those of you who are not familiar with Charlie, he has been showing steadily in the 5-gaited division since 2016 and earned his RWC title in his show debut that same year with Pieter Snyman.
Charlie is by Heir Emerald and out of Worth Steeling and was bred by Debra and Jerry Tolliver in Greenback, Tennessee.

It’s worth watching over and over to see how masterfully Kristen rode this horse, managed the ring, positioned her horse expertly for displaying him to the judges and the perfection of horsemanship in how she bridled the horse and how she asked the horse to do the very most that he could but did not ask the horse to do more than he could. Hagan Saddlebreds is excited to announce its purchase of Massive Stroke (to be shown as All American), a 5-year-old bay gelding Standardbred, from Anthony Miller at the 2022 Memorial Trotting Sale in Mt. Hope, Ohio. All American was expertly prepared by Robert Miller, Green Acres Stable, Navarre, Ohio. All American was bred by Shanamphilankilou Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is out of Hawaiian Stroke and by the impressive Muscle Massive, who has earned over $1.2 million in his racing career and was the winner of the 2010 Hambletonian.
We had the opportunity to speak with Bernie Gaff, Jr. (“Bernie”), a former owner of All American, who gave us a bit of history about him. All American overcame 2 bouts of catastrophic illness in 2020 only to bounce back to racing. He had double pneumonia and was hospitalized for 13 days. When he was released, he was turned out for 30 days to recuperate but then contracted a virus which also nearly took his life. During these illnesses, he lost over 200 pounds.
Bernie said, “We had him ready to race at The Meadows and he got sick. He just wasn’t himself. We didn’t know if he would make it.” All American’s veterinarian at the time, Dr. Brown, said, “I haven’t seen a horse that sick in years.” But great care helped him bounce back and race again.

Roy Barnhart, a former trainer of All American said, “It was a lot of stress, a lot of work and sleepless nights. It was horrible. He would eat very little. I bought different types of feed that I thought he would eat. But one day, I walked into the barn and he had his head stuck out of his stall and ever since then he’s been full tilt.”
Bernie describes All American as, “A horse with a lot of character, a showboat. He loves attention, has his own mind and loves to pass other horses. He also loves chocolate glazed donuts and will tear the barn up if he doesn’t get one every morning.”

Hawker is a big bay gelding by Neely Dunn, a Standardbred stallion known for having a lot of speed and whose offspring have topped many sales. Hawker was bred by Andy Burkholder in Holmesville, Ohio and is out of Personal Trainer. He made quite a splash in his first year in the show ring. Registered with the USTA as Neely Trainer and formerly showing under the name of Outer Banks, Hawker was crowned the 2020 USTA World’s Champion in only his third horse show appearance.
Hawker was purchased by Hagan Saddlebreds in 2021 to show in the Amateur Roadster To Bike division. Due to his extreme speed, classic good looks and high quality, he was renamed Hawker 850 after the popular corporate jet. His trainer, Shane Mullens of Diamond View Farm, put the new team in the ring at the 2021 Mercer County Fair where they debuted to win the Amateur Roadster To Bike Stake. Smoke Stack is one of the most popular roadsters under saddle showing today. He is a Dutch Harness horse and is registered as Donamite. Smoke Stack is by Dondersteen and out of Soline (a Dutch Harness/Hackney cross) by Solist. He was bred by Daniel Stolzfus and first showed in 2016 when he competed in the Dutch Fine Harness division as well as in the Roadster To Bike and Roadster Under Saddle divisions. In 2018, he was undefeated under saddle all year until the Kentucky State Fair. There he earned the title Open Roadster Under Saddle World’s Champion but had to settle for Reserve World’s Champion of Champions in the Roadster Under Saddle Stake. He followed up later that year with a win at the Dutch Harness Finals in the Dutch Roadster Under Saddle Stake. In 2019, he was again undefeated all year in the Roadster Under Saddle division until the Kentucky State Fair where he won the RWC Open Roadster Under Saddle title.

Where it all began…
“In the early 1960s, when my father, Dr. John Hagan, was finishing his internship at the University of Kentucky Medical School, he walked past a bulletin board one day and saw a sign that read, “small town needs doctor.” He took the bulletin, visited North Middletown, Kentucky and decided to set up his practice there. A few years after we moved to North Middletown (we being my older brother, Terry, my younger brother, Hart, my father and my mother, Sara), my father met Buford Hall, an African-American resident of North Middletown who had been in the American Saddlebred horse business his whole life. My father and mother decided that they wanted their sons to learn responsibility and strong work ethic and chose breeding, raising, training and selling American Saddlebreds as the way to do that. Both mares are by WGC sire Attaches’ Born Believer and out of Dream A Dream (BHF) by Sultan’s Spartan (WC). Their third dam is Five-Gaited World’s Grand Champion CHDream Waltz (BHF) (WGC, WC, RWCC, RWC), full sister to CHWing Commander (WGC, WC, RWGC). They are full siblings to CHVegas Dreams (WC), Man What A Dream (BHF), dam of Exclamation Mark! (WC), Riverdreams’ Spitfire (WC, RWC), Riverdreams’ Remarcable (WC) and Keep Dreaming (RWC). Interestingly, in the fifth and sixth generations of the dam side of their pedigrees, there are multiple crosses to CHKing’s Genius (WC) and his sire Bourbon King (WGC) making my two best mares line bred through their dam line to the two most important stallions to come from North Middletown where it all started for me. Full brother to WGC HS Daydream’s Heads Up, he is extremely gifted, and was destined for the show ring before a catastrophic injury blinded him just weeks before he went into training. A loss to the show world but a great asset to the breeding world. He is by the number one rated sire Undulata’s Nutcracker, known for siring very athletic and game offspring including Fine Harness World’s Grand Champions Nutcracker’s Nirvana and CHLady Mandolin, and Three-Gaited World’s Grand Champions CHMacadamia, WGC HS Daydream’s Heads Up, and CHDon O’Neill. Nelson Green saw this colt long line just days before his injury and is quoted as saying, “That is the best prospect I’ve seen in my career.”
His first foals out of mares such as WC producer Daphne Dearest, WC producer Positively Peggy and multiple RWC producer HS Daydream’s Dream Girl are just now entering training.
